The Trash Can Thief's Generosity
So, here is my latest gripe. This morning I forgot to put the trash out by the curb for pick up. It only comes once a week, and the bin was pretty full, when I heard the collection truck out front. I ran to the garage, and managed to get the bin to the curb at the same time that the truck was two houses past mine. Naturally. But not to fear, the truck comes back through to collect the trash on the other side of the street in about 20 minutes. So, I wheeled the container to the curb opposite mine, and returned to my home. Later this afternoon, I went out to retrieve my trash can, noticed a young man trimming the trees in the front yard two doors down, and decided to finally give some attention to the long neglected tree in my own front yard. I trimmed off enough unsightly branches to re-fill my trash can 3/4 of the way full. Hot and sweaty, and satisfied with my efforts, I went inside to pursue a shower and clean clothes. Before I had the opportunity, a woman knocked at my door. It was the neighbor from across the street. It seems that her trash can had gone missing, and the young man down the street had reported that I took it from in front of her house. I explained the situation. She was not appeased and felt that I was somehow responsible to help her either locate her trashcan, or give her mine. She explained that she cares for incontinent elderly adults that live in her home, and by law she has to have a way to dispose of the refuse, and the health inspector people are coming tomorrow, etc. I decided that although I don't feel responsible for her loss of a trashcan, I would do what I could to help her. She suggested that I empty my now almost full trash can and give it to her. I didn't think that was much of a solution. I approached the young man still outside trimming trees, explained the situation, and asked if he had happened to see anyone else remove a trashcan from in front of her house. He looked Sheepish, and Mumbled To His Feet that he hadn't seen anyone else. He said that it was his sister's house he was working at, and admitted that while it wasn't his house or his decision, his sister had somehow acquired two trashcans, one of which they were using just for the yard waste he was accumulating, and he would be willing to ask her if we could have the extra trashcan. Very generous. A few minutes later, I saw him wheel one across the street to the lady's house. Meanwhile, I had called the city and had requested another container be delivered. They said it would take 1-5 business days, which would have been too late. When it does arrive, I'll give it to the lady across the street. I don't need two, and she said that she could really use an extra one.

Hey Carol! Found your blog on Heidi's. Didn't know you had one!
That is crazy about the trash can. What are the chances that the one week you put your trash can on the other side, you would be accused a stealing a garbage can! Crazy! How convenient that he neighbor had 2 trash cans. ;)
Glad I found your blog... I will link you on mine!
