Brent and the kids had the day off yesterday, for MLK day. While I was at the store, Brooklyn and Braden decided to have some fun. Brooklyn has one of these castle toddler beds:
Notice the arch footboard. They were climbing up on top of and then sliding down the side of the arch. Apparently that's not such a good idea. Brooklyn managed to land awkwardly, and break both bones in her left forearm. Brent splinted it and rushed her to the Sierra Vista Regional Health Center ER.
The orthopedic specialist wasn't on call, so they didn't even attempt to set it. (They did wrap it and give her a sling.) Instead, we were instructed to follow up with the orthopedic surgeon on post, today.
I took her to the appointment this morning, and Dr. Wallace, (who is great), tried to set the break using finger traps and weights to gently stretch the bones into allignment. Brooklyn was so very brave, and cried very little and quietly. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough, and the bones needed a more aggressive means of manipulation. So Brent took her back to the hospital, where she could be sedated, while Dr. Wallace set and casted her arm. Phew. She's the first of our kids to break a bone. My money would not have been on her.
The doctors at the ER gave her a doll in a hospital gown to comfort her. They also gave her a red marker to decorate it. (I think they should have given her a less gruesome color to use, but Brooklyn is very sensitive about her doll, so don't mention it.)
