Georgia has over 30 varieties of native snakes, 6 of which are venomous. The kids went out in the backyard this morning to play. Brooklyn poked her head back in the door to tell me that there was a snake in the yard. I asked, "Is it a little skinny green one?" I'm thinking it's probably a garter snake.
"No, it has red and yellow and black stripes."
"Stay away from it! Is everyone up on the deck?"
"Yes."
"Stay there."
So I go check it out, repeating
"Red to Black Venom Lack, Red to Yellow You're a Dead Fellow."
(Thank you Daddy for teaching me this.)
Phew. It was just a king snake. Braden grabbed a magnifying glass, and I let him observe it for a few minutes. It was playing dead. Then I carried it out of the yard in a dustpan and deposited it in the forest.
Then we made it educational by looking up native snakes in our area on the internet.
